“The course work I completed at RMU Graduate School has given me technical skills applicable to my career which I use on a daily basis,” he says proudly.
Derrick Hawthorne is quite an active RMU Alumni, both on and off campus. Derrick graduated from Morris Graduate School of Management in 2010 with his MBA in Accounting. He is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and currently serves as the Asset Manager for The Habitat Company in which he focuses on the investment goals and value maximization of an asset portfolio, covering five Metropolitan Service Areas. Derrick oversees property performance by monitoring micro and macroeconomic influences on value, supply, and demand dynamics. His day-to-day objectives include searching for strategic opportunities to refinance, reposition, and acquire new assets. With his experience at Robert Morris, Derrick appreciates how he is able to take what he has learned at Robert Morris University and apply it to his leadership position at The Habitat Company. “The course work I completed at RMU Graduate School has given me technical skills applicable to my career which I use on a daily basis,” he says proudly. He admits, the most challenging task upon graduating with his MBA was becoming a CPA. However, the courses he enrolled in throughout the MGSM program lent well to navigating the process. “My biggest accomplishment to date is earning my CPA license,” he says. Derrick has no plans of slowing down anytime soon when it comes to his career endeavors. In the next five years, Derrick aspires to become a senior real-estate executive and eventually strives to become either vice-president of development or vice-president of investment.

Derrick’s current work responsibilities include establishing annual property level and portfolio level performance goals along with Key Performance Indicators, actively maintaining current market knowledge, timely and accurate financial analysis reporting, overseeing acquisition due diligence and understanding and collaborating in investment underwriting. Prior to joining the Habitat Company, Derrick worked in several capacities in the Real-Estate Industry.

In addition, Derrick is an active Robert Morris Alumni, taking office as the Treasurer and Board Member of the RMU Graduate Alumni Advisory Board. Derrick also serves on The School of Hospitality Business Real-Estate and Development Advisory Council. The life of an accountant has proven to be a very busy one and Derrick finds relief by spending quality time with his wife and newborn daughter.
