Give back to everyone who helped shape and mold you into who you are. Most often, those are going to be the individuals that will give you the third party connections to help you get to the next level in your professional and personal life.
Finding the perfect job can be quite the challenge. When this happens, some graduates may choose to create their own career path in order to find the right blend, meeting both their personal and professional needs. Robert Morris University alumnus, Marcellus Hendricks, always knew that he wanted to be his own boss. He chose to attend RMU, completing his bachelor degree in graphic arts, with the hopes of gaining the necessary skills to become a successful entrepreneur. Currently, he works as Associate and College Consultant at World Financial Group and Heartland Institute of Financial Education respectively. Concurrently, he is in the midst of building a marketing and financial firm of his own. "Almost all my instructors had a life outside of school with other art projects or businesses they ran. It really showed that being an entrepreneur was possible,” he reflects.
While at RMU, Hendricks took many courses that taught him the essential skills in becoming an entrepreneur. Utilizing these skills, he was able to land several freelance projects that helped to jump start his career. Hendricks credits the diversity of the student body at RMU as allowing him to be exposed to different people of different backgrounds and become more understanding of others.
Post-graduation, Hendricks has built a career on his various talents as well as his passion for helping others. Within the next five years, he hopes to grow his marketing and financial firm to multiple offices with at least 100 people employed to run them. Hendricks believes his biggest professional achievement is in building a business that allows others to learn and support their families.
On a more personal level, his proudest moments include becoming a Ministerial Servant in his congregation and volunteering to preach in his community. Hendricks also dedicates his time at Kingdom Hall to preach and has served as a guest speaker and mentor to many at RMU.
A quality education paired with determination has allowed Hendricks to grow into a successful businessman who cares deeply about his community. His resiliency, focus, and ability to find the right team have allowed him to overcome challenges and grow his business in a positive way. Hendricks shares advice for future graduates: “Network with everyone. Give back to everyone who helped shape and mold you into who you are. Most often, those are going to be the individuals that will give you the third party connections to help you get to the next level in your professional and personal life.”
